One of the worst thing for me about not being in class with you all right now, is the fact that I never got to let you play with pitched instruments in class! A pitched instrument is any instrument that you play that has different pitches to create a melody! For example, a piano, flute, violin and guitar are all pitched instruments that we're familiar with. Since we've been learning about percussion instruments, I was planning on teaching you to a pitched percussion instrument--the xylophone! A xylophone is a pretty neat instrument, we can use it to play pretty much any melody, and depending on how hard we hit it we can make it very quiet or very loud! Since I can't possibly deliver a xylophone to each of you to play with at home, I'm going to teach you how to make them at home yourself! InstructionsThis is a Water Glass Xylophone. Although, I'm sure you've noticed that those are jars, not glasses! You'll need:
Arrange 4-8 glasses, putting different amounts of water in each to create pitches from high to low. It'll be a bit trickier if your containers are all different sizes, you will have to use your ears to make sure that the pitch is what you would like to hear! If your containers are all the same, you just have to make sure that each glass has a different amount of water: 1/2 cup, 1 cup, 1 1/2 cups...and so on. You can play your new instrument with a spoon, a pencil, or a chopstick! What does it sound like? Can you make a song with it? Can you send me a video of the song you created? You can go to this website if you would like more instructions. A bit more...I wonder what animal the flute is suppose to be? Can you try and be that animal too?
