Music is all around us in this world, even if we’re not paying attention, or we don’t think it counts as music. We all like different types of music--what we think is music might be noise to other people, and what other people think is noise might be music to you. This week, I want everyone to focus on the sounds of the space around you. Through our silence, we can hear the “music” of our surroundings and everyday life. Instructions:Find a comfy spot in your house, in your yard, or on the balcony. Be silent and still and just listen to all the sounds around you. It might take a little bit to start noticing the noises of everyday life. Draw a map of the sounds around you, put yourself in the middle and mark down all the sounds you hear with symbols, try your best to figure out which direction the sound is coming from. Do this for about 5 minutes, how many sounds did you hear? Be sure to include a legend of what the symbols mean! Do this in a couple of different places when you can, what differences do you notice? What sounds help you calm your mind? What sounds frustrate you? I would love to see a picture of your map! Example:A bit more...The world has been stressful lately, there’s a lot going on and our routines have been completely changed. Maybe like me you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed or lost, and just want to find something to help us get back to normal. Sometimes music can alter our mood, some music makes us feel happier, angrier, or sadder. What music can you listen to now to help you calm your mind and put you in a better mood? Can you share that music with me?

Take a picture of (or with) it and send it to me! The easiest way would be through the contact form on this website, or you can just email it directly to me at [email protected]

Hi Alexis :) First things first, find a comfy spot and sit/lie down. You just need to focus on the sounds that are occurring naturally around you--so if you hear a bird chirp behind you, draw a symbol for that behind you. It doesn't have to be "nature" sounds, just anything you hear that you didn't create. If you live by a busy street, you might hear a lot more cars for example.
