I've been so upset that I never got to finish teaching you how to play a pitched instrument with confidence and joy! I feel like we got the rug pulled out from under us, just as many of you are starting to get familiar with the ukulele! Those of you that are lucky enough to have pitched instruments at home (a pitched instrument is any instruments that you can play different notes on to create a melody like a ukulele, guitar, piano, violin...etc.), I hope you're spending more time playing and experimenting with it. Those without, we can create one ourselves! I was planning on taking a break from the ukulele with you guys to learn some songs on the xylophone, obviously, we can't do that now, but we can make our own xylophones at home.... InstructionsThis is called a glass xylophone You'll need:
Arrange 4-8 glasses, putting different amounts of water in each to create pitches from high to low. It'll be a bit trickier if your containers are all different sizes, you will have to use your ears to make sure that the pitch is what you would like to hear! If your containers are all the same, you just have to make sure that each glass has a different amount of water: 1/2 cup, 1 cup, 1 1/2 cups...and so on. You can play your new instrument with a spoon, a pencil, or a chopstick! Can you create a simple song with your new instrument? Can you recreate a song that you know and love? Look here if you want more instructions on how to create your own water glass xylophone! A bit more... Here's a bit of a challenge for you... Try and match one of your water glass to this pitch. Take out and add a bit of water as needed until you're making the same tone! It's a bit like tuning a ukulele, but I'm hoping easier since there won't be 20+ other ukuleles playing at the same time around you! Send me a picture, or better yet, a video of your instrument and composition! Let me know how it worked and how you felt trying to tune it!
